What is Pilates ?

The Pilates method, originally named Contrology, was developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century. It is a unique system of exercises designed to improve core strength, flexibility, posture, and overall body awareness. Pilates helps enhance muscle tone, balance, and coordination while promoting mindful movement and reducing the risk of injury. Suitable for all fitness levels, it supports rehabilitation and long-term wellbeing.

Discover the Benefits of Pilates: Strength, Flexibility & Balance for Everyone

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise designed to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Although Pilates movements primarily target the core, they also engage other parts of the body for a balanced, full-body workout.

You can practice Pilates with or without equipment, but no matter the method, the exercises are controlled, precise, and flow smoothly, always coordinated with mindful breathing.

When practiced consistently, Pilates strengthens and stabilizes your centre—the core of your body, including the abdomen, lower back, and pelvis. This foundation helps you move more efficiently while improving posture, flexibility, and mobility. The practice emphasizes alignment, breath control, and developing a strong “powerhouse,” resulting in better balance, coordination, and a profound sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

One of the beauties of Pilates is its adaptability: it can be tailored to suit beginners through to advanced practitioners, making it suitable for all ages and abilities.

Pilates sessions can be performed on a mat or using specialized equipment like the Reformer—a sliding platform with springs, pulleys, and a footbar providing resistance. Other equipment includes the Wunda Chair and Tower/Cadillac. For those who find floor exercises challenging, Pilates can also be practiced seated or supported using an everyday chair.

I teach a diverse range of clients—men, women, young adults, and more mature individuals—and everyone leaves feeling both mentally and physically refreshed, happy, and relaxed.

Pilates not only complements everyday activities like walking or gardening but also offers excellent health benefits that enhance performance in other sports. By working on posture, balance, alignment, stabilization, mobilization, and flexibility, Pilates supports and improves activities such as running, cycling, horse riding, golf, tennis, and many more.

“Pilates is a full-body exercise method that will help you do everything better!”
